Material Comparison

Not sure which material fits your project? Compare strength, durability, flexibility, print cost, and surface finish at a glance — then check the cards below for real examples and a cheaper alternative if one exists.

ABS ★★★★☆ ★★★★☆ ★★★☆☆ Medium-High ★★★☆☆
TPU ★★★☆☆ ★★★★★ ★★★★★ High ★★★★☆
PLA

The easy, detailed, budget-friendly default.

Best For

Display models, prototypes, figurines, and any low-stress part where visual quality matters most.

Example Projects
  • Architectural & presentation models
  • Decorative figurines and props
  • Low-load brackets and mounts

Prints with the sharpest detail and best out-of-the-box finish of any material here, at the lowest cost — ideal when a part just needs to look great and won't be dropped, flexed, or left in the sun.

Nothing beats PLA on cost for display work. If the part needs to survive rougher handling, step up to PLA+ for a small cost increase.
PLA+

PLA's finish with real impact resistance.

Best For

Functional prototypes, light mechanical parts, and everyday items that get picked up and handled.

Example Projects
  • Functional prototypes & enclosures
  • Tool handles and light-duty gears
  • Toys and household fixtures

Keeps PLA's easy printing and clean finish but resists cracking and impact far better — the best "just print it" choice for parts that need to survive daily use, not just sit on a shelf.

If the part is purely decorative, plain PLA is slightly cheaper. If it needs to handle moisture, heat, or the outdoors, go to PETG instead.
PETG

Tough, weather- and chemical-resistant.

Best For

Outdoor parts, mechanical fixtures, containers, and anything exposed to moisture, chemicals, or sunlight.

Example Projects
  • Outdoor brackets & mounts
  • Containers and enclosures
  • Mechanical fixtures near moisture

Combines PLA-like ease of printing with genuine long-term durability — it won't go brittle in the sun or degrade around water and mild chemicals the way PLA eventually does.

For indoor-only parts that won't face moisture or UV, PLA+ gives similar toughness for a lower cost and easier print.
ABS

Heat-resistant and impact-tough.

Best For

Automotive and heat-adjacent parts, and anything that benefits from acetone-vapor smoothing for a polished finish.

Example Projects
  • Automotive interior parts
  • Enclosures near heat sources
  • Housings finished with acetone smoothing

Handles heat (up to ~100°C) and impact better than PLA-based materials, and can be vapor-polished to a smooth, professional surface — but needs a controlled print environment to avoid warping.

For most jobs, PETG matches ABS's strength and durability without the warping risk or need for an enclosed printer — only pick ABS when the extra heat resistance is actually required.
TPU

Rubber-like flexibility that snaps back.

Best For

Anything that needs to bend, stretch, compress, or absorb impact and return to shape.

Example Projects
  • Phone & device cases
  • Custom gaskets and seals
  • Wearable straps, shock-absorbing feet

The only material on this list with true elastomeric flex and excellent abrasion resistance — nothing else here can substitute where rubber-like behavior is the actual requirement.

For parts that only need a small amount of give (like a living hinge) rather than full elasticity, PETG can sometimes work at a lower cost — but it won't match TPU's flex or rebound.

Availability and exact colors are updated live — the current options will show when you place an order. Every quote is priced per job, so exact cost depends on your model's size, complexity, and quantity.
